Harvard Square Script Writers (HSSW) is one of the oldest and most established script writing groups in the nation.  Founded by Laura Bernieri in 1986, run until 2011 by Scott Anderson, and now under the direction of Genine Tillotson, HSSW is a place for creative people to hone their craft.  We offer assistance in the development, refinement, and promotion of screenplays, TV series, streaming projects and stage plays.  HSSW became a 501 (c) 3 non-profit in 2012.

The organization is dedicated to the idea that every great film, series, or stage play is born out of a compelling script.

Over the past 3 decades we have witnessed a transformation in the professional possibilities for scriptwriters. With the expansion of cable TV (at now over 200 channels), the internet, and on-demand video streaming, the venues for entertainment writing have literally exploded. In 2020 alone over 240 scripted TV series were being produced by a combination of networks and streaming services..

Highly affordable shooting and editing equipment have also re-shaped the film-making world, creating production opportunities far beyond the multi-million dollar Hollywood feature.

Until the arrival of Covid19, HSSW met weekly to critique members’ work (in Cambridge, Massachusetts), additionally sponsoring workshops on a wide range of topics, from how to write a compelling log line to developing a powerful third act.  New members are always welcome and are encouraged to attend a trial meeting or two before submitting their work for review.  Dues for regular in-person meetings was $20.00, payable in cash or check.

Due to the Corona Virus Pandemic, HSSW currently holds its meetings virtually each Monday from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, EST.  Anyone from around the world may participate by contacting admin@hsswriters.com and paying a small fee via Zelle or Paypal. The reduced fee for virtual participation is $10.00.

Authors seeking a script, treatment or outline review must first join as a Lifetime Author Member for $300.00 and should plan on attending at least two script reviews prior to submitting a script of his or her own.  This is a one-time fee. See Membership for further details.

The payment for membership is due 2 weeks prior to the member’s first review session.
