HSSW’s internship program was launched in 2014 and, to date, we have graduated 22 students from colleges and universities in the greater Boston area.   Interns work closely with HSSW members in a number of creative areas. PLEASE NOTE: Currently our program is on hiatus.

We look forward to re-instituting the internships once the general population is vaccinated and schools resume in-person classes.  Any internship applicant should be prepared to show proof of vaccination as a condition of employment (paid or volunteer) with our organization.  Stay tuned for updates!  Here are the details:

Are you interested in challenging yourself in a number of media arenas from script writing to video production?  Then Harvard Square Script Writers might be the place for you.  Projects that we (HSSW) work on include script reviews, screenings, workshops, the TV show, Second Chance Cinema and other film projects.  As an intern for the organization, you will contribute to all of these efforts.

Harvard Square Script Writers seeks passionate, flexible, and hard working interns for the academic semester starting in fall of 2021.  Below are some of the myriad activities we sponsor:

Small Script Review Meetings

As an intern, you will learn about a variety of film genres, and work with fellow award-winning writers as well as new-comers as we help authors to prepare their scripts for submission to production companies and/or contests.  You’ll participate as we analyze a variety of script types (from pilots to webisodes to features) , looking at everything from story structure to character development.

From L to R: Bob Tremblay, Rich Faymonville, Genine Tillotson and Joel Karlinsky debate the merits of lesser known films.

Second Chance Cinema

Second Chance Cinema is Harvard Square Script Writers’ film critique program which airs on local public access channels, as well as streaming on our own Vimeo channel.

Second Chance Cinema’s main objective is to revisit and promote films that were not given a proper run in the mainstream for a variety of reasons, or have fallen into a state of obscurity – hence our tag line: “The best films you’ve never seen.” As an intern, you may contribute by researching a film’s history, selecting films for review, operating a camera, helping to direct the show, running the sound board, or even participating as one of the panelists.

Social Media & Marketing Techniques

You will also assist in keeping HSSW’s online social platforms current,  adding content to the website, Meet-up group, Facebook page, Twitter, and e-newsletters. This is a great opportunity to hone your writing skills, experiment with photography, learn about branding, layout, and publishing styles – all as part of communicating our non-profit’s mission to the world.

Work in a Production or Post Production Capacity on In-Development Film Efforts

Interns joining in the fall may also work on a new film’s production or post production.  You may assist in everything from research and script review, to a variety of production and post-production tasks, including selecting takes, working on rights clearances; developing marketing strategies; creating social media promotionals, and fund-raising for the development of future projects.

Rhea Bhargava and Guru Ramanathan show off their HSSW graduate certificates.

Ideally the interns will have skills in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Photoshop and other CS Adobe products
  • Ability to edit in Adobe Premiere or Final Cut X
  • Interest in the script writing and the film-making processes–how they coalesce to make a great cinematic experience
  • Experience in either Final Draft or Movie Magic scripting software
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to work with script writers of all ages, genders, and ethnicities at our weekly meetings
  • Knowledge of how to work within a pre-built website, authored in WordPress
  • Some web and social media technical skills
  • Interest in creating media (graphics, film and stills) in support of the above
  • Interest and willingness to help HSSW develop new contests and sponsorship opportunities, including professional workshops
  • Interest in the marketing and promotion of film and television, using various media platforms.

Interested students should contact HSSW Director Genine Tillotson at genine@hsswriters.com with a letter of inquiry, CV, and links to any relevant projects.
