Join us next Monday, October 7th for a review of Rodrigo Monterrey’s spec episode for the TV series, Barry where the antihero’s inability to rehabilitate himself causes pretty bloody results.
Logline: Barry is a lonely, burnt-out contract killer (a combat vet with PTSD), seeking connection and salvation in the LA acting community, but his past crimes and criminal associates won’t let him go.
Genre: Half-hour dramedy on HBO
Background/Theme: Season 1 Asked: Can someone who has done bad things still be good/loved? It ended with Barry killing the detective on his trail, Janice, who was also the girlfriend of his acting coach (and surrogate father). Season 2 continued with that theme, but also asked: Can people really change? It ended with Barry, who had spent the whole season trying not to kill anyone, going on a rampage when his former handler kidnapped the coach and told him what Barry did. Season 3, according to interviews with the creators, will be about dealing/living with your demons and the consequences of your actions.
Things to Keep in Mind [from Rodrigo]:
- The script is written in the style of actual Barry scripts, e.g. episodes titled in numerical order as chapters, etc
- By now (2 seasons) there is a shorthand, e.g. descriptions(or lack thereof) of characters, locations, wardrobe, etc.
- Cast of characters:
– Barry Berkman, aka Barry Block (contract killer, aspiring actor): late 30s, 6’2″, white, very stiff, tense
– Monroe Fuches, aka Goulais (Barry’s handler): late 50s, overweight, sleazy, a manipulator
– Gene Cousineau (acting teacher): early 60s, longish hair, artsy, vain, but caring, fatherly
– Hank (wannabe mobster): mid 30s, bald, Chechen, very clean, just a bit effeminate
– Sally (talented actor in bit parts): early 30s, blonde, petite, self-absorbed, a bit desperate
– Mae (rookie detective): early 40s, looks like a suburban mom, a bit flaky, cooky
– Cristobal (drug dealer): mid 40s, Bolivian, short, hank’s idol and self-help guru
