Harvard Square Script Writers takes a break from script reviews on Monday, October 3rd with two screenings graciously hosted by Talamas in their Newton event space.
These wildly different shorts (one drama, one comedy) will be viewed, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers Roberto Mighty and Raouf Zaki, moderated by Harvard Square Script Writers Director, Genine Tillotson.
Peach Pie, written, directed and edited by Roberto Mighty, follows one afternoon in the life of a 7-year old boy and his mentally ill mother. Still in mourning after their soldier father/husband is killed in action, they struggle to cope day-to-day. An intervention by a well meaning neighbor leads to an emotional moment. Based on a poem by Charles Coe.
ABOUT ROBERTO MIGHTY:
Roberto Mighty is a filmmaker and multimedia artist who uses interactive and online technology in his work. Roberto’s dramatic short film about mental illness in a military family, Peach Pie, premiered at the California International Shorts Festival in June, 2016; and is an Official Selection at the Urban Mediamakers Film Festival in October, 2016. Roberto is currently the first Artist-in-Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery, a National Historic Site, where he is completing a 3-year project creating and producting 35 original short films that will screen in a 5-projector multimedia installation inside a 19th century Gothic Chapel. Roberto has received fellowships and grants from the Kopkind/CID Film Fellowship; National Black Programming Consortium and National Association of Latino Independent Producers. In 2015, Roberto was appointed to the City of Boston’s first Artist Residency Cohort. Roberto is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College. In Beyond the Grid we meet Andrew, a simple, dignified gentleman just looking for love. But when he arrives at Debi’s home for their first date, he is unprepared for just how “beyond the grid” she is. The film is directed by Raouf Zaki, produced by Hana Zaki and Jennifer Gjulameti, with screenplay written by Jason K. Allen.
ABOUT RAOUF ZAKI:
Raouf Zaki is the president of RA Vision Productions. Since September 11th, he has dedicated himself to creating films that bridge Western and Arabic cultures. Beyond the Grid is Zaki’s third film. His first film, Just Your Average Arab, won Best Film at the 2006 Boston Comedy and Film Festival. His second film, Santa Claus in Baghdad, won third place for Best Independent Short, Ages 12-18, at the 2008 KIDS FIRST! film festival. It was also an official selection at the 2008 Rhode Island Film Festival and the 2009 Garden State Film Festival. Santa Claus in Baghdad continues to be widely embraced by colleges and universities throughout the United States.
