How do you write a TV pilot that will excite producers, seasoned show runners, and executives? Join us for the first in a series of educational workshops – Writing Your TV Series.
HSSW senior members Eafat Newton and Charlie Lyons will discuss the fundamentals of writing a TV pilot and a show bible. We will also discuss how act breaks differ for commercial versus premium networks or streaming projects.

Charlie Lyons:
Charlie has been writing feature scripts and TV pilots for … a while. His latest half-hour comedy pilot script The DuChamps was a semifinalist (top 1%) in the 2016 Austin Film Festival, and was also the winner of the Original Comedy category of CineStory’s 2017 TV/Digital competition. Additionally, his drama feature Strays (written with Rodrigo Monterrey) and a Transparent spec script advanced to the second round (top 15%) at Austin in 2016.
Charlie is also a former prosecutor and currently works as a criminal defense attorney. He sincerely hopes you’ll never need his legal services.
Eafat Newton:
After earning her MBA, Eafat worked as an account manager at a leading multinational market research firm. Eager to explore human behavior beyond data analysis, she turned to creative writing and completed a Screenwriting Certificate from Emerson, which included a 10-week television writing class.
Eafat has been an active member of HSSW since 2013 and previously served on its Board. Her work includes four features and two pilots. She placed Runner Up in Family Drama in the 2014 Woods Hole Film Festival, was invited to develop her scripts at the Stowe Story Labs, and most recently was a finalist in the Roadmap Writers Iconic Character competition for her new project Unorthodox.
BEFORE THE WORKSHOP:
Participants should read the pilot scripts for Game of Thrones , Scrubs, Breaking Bad and view the following episodes of two web series – Broad City (series later developed for TV through Comedy Central) – High Maintenance (picked up by HBO for series development).
